Find what you have been wondering about.

How many people are using e-bikes for sporting clays, skeet, and trap around the US?

It is a little tough to say exactly but just based the ones I know for sure and feedback from tournaments, I would put the number at around 200 – 300.  And growing rapidly!  Two years ago it would have been a novelty to see an e-bike at an NSCA tournament.  Now (2025) it is expected.

Have you heard of any courses that do not allow e-bikes?

With the move towards larger and larger UTV’s as well as mini trucks, smart cars, Fiat 500’s, and Suzuki Jimny’s, e-bikes are a welcome addition to courses and tournaments.  They take up less room on the course, take up less room in the parking lot, and do not tear up the ground they drive over.  Not to mention leaving more money in the pockets of their owners to spend on additional events.  That being said, I do now of exactly one club across the entire US that does not allow bikes (of any sort) on their course.

Will my shotgun fit?

As a general statement all shotguns commonly used in clay target shooting will fit. I am often asked if semi-auto’s will fit.  I do not have a lot of pictures posted of the scabbards with autos in them, but I have had plenty of auto customers.  Auto’s, even with extended bolt handles will fit just fine because the bolt handle is above the top of the scabbard when inserted. All Over/Unders will fit.  I’ve only had one shot gun fit and that was a particular side by side 12 ga.

Will it fit my e-bike?

The short answer is “yes” it will fit basically any e-bike.  Early on I did come across a few bikes that required a larger clamp on the bottom and that is why you see the larger bottom clamp on the scabbard now. Since going to the larger bottom clamp I have yet to come across or hear about an e-bike that it will not fit.  And in that time I personally looked at a lot of e-bikes.  My guess would by on the order of 40-50 different models!

Will it fit my e-trike?

There are only a few people that I know of that are using the scabbards on e-trikes.  They have mounted them to the rear of the trike in order to leave access to the front basket and from what I have heard this has worked very well.  As I side note, the one thing that I have heard from trike owners is that a trike on the larger/heavier side is probably best in order to handle the terrain of most sporting clays courses.

Will it fit my pedal bike?

I have only mounted one of the scabbards to a pedal bike.  Mounting to the back was best because with the lighter weight of the pedal bike it likely would have made the bike unstable if mounted to the front.  I have stayed in contact with this customer and he continues to use his pedal bike however I have definitely found most people want the e-assist for sporting clays.

What type of e-bike do you recommend?

I do not sell e-bikes so I do not recommend any particular brand or model.  Everyone has their own particular needs and use cases and there is realistically a bike on the market now to suit anyone’s needs.  I do however, point out a few e-bike features that I have found to be very valuable.

  • Controller: Ensure the controller stays on long enough for you to shoot a station and is easy and quick to turn back on if it does shut off. All controllers time out and shut off.  Some take longer than others to power back up but all are on the order of a couple seconds.  You just don't want to have to wait for the controller to power up when you're ready to move to the next station.
  • Twist Throttle: Look for a twist throttle that works regardless of the assist level you're on and one that works without needing to pedal. This allows you to just twist the throttle and go, which is important for easy movement on the course.
  • Wide Step-Through: A nice wide step-through frame is essential for easy mounting and dismounting.
  • Compact Frame: A reasonably compact frame is important for maneuverability and transportability. It’s helpful to keep the seat low so your feet can easily touch the ground when stopping and starting.
  • Tires: I think the 3.3" wide tires of my e-bike strike a good balance between low rolling resistance and off-road performance.  However, I have seen both wider and narrower tires on the course working just as well.

How long does it take to install?

Have a look at my initial installation video here (link) and you can see it just takes a few minutes to do the initial setup.  After the initial setup is done it just takes a few (literally 2-3) seconds to install or remove the scabbards.  Also note that when the scabbard is removed it really is completely removed.  There are no remaining parts or hardware left hanging on the bike.

Do you take it on and off every time you go to the course?

Definitely!  This is one of the main design features of the scabbard and one of the things I like the most about it.  I carry the scabbard in my trunk to the course, install it when I get there, and remove it when I leave.  This way I can use the bike for other things (like riding trails or just around the town) and I don’t have a shotgun scabbard hanging on the side.

Will it also work on my golf cart?

Absolutely.  The clamps and mounting brackets are basically universal and can be adjusted to mount to just about anything.  You just have to have two points more than about 8-10” away from each other to clamp to.  Clamping to the A-pillar works very well as it leaves your gun within sight when you are driving and readily accessible when you get to the station.

Do you have a mount for my UTV?

I do not.  I am working on one though and hope to have something available by summer of 2026.

How much does the scabbard weigh?

Exactly 5 lbs.

What are the scabbard dimensions?

The nominal inside dimension of padded liner is 31.7" x 4.4" x 1.8".

Can it be mounted to the back of my bike?

Yes.  The EbikeScabbard shotgun scabbard can be mounted just as easily to the rear of the bike as the front.  I have even seen one customer buy two so that he could have one set up for the rear and one for the front to suit his mood for the day.  I personally prefer to mount it to the front just so I can see my gun and know I didn’t leave it in the rack at the last stand.

Is there padding in the bottom to protect the ends of my barrels?

In total there is 1.25” of foam padding in the bottom of the scabbard under the gun barrels (chokes).  As well as keeping the ends of the barrels protected it also keeps the gun from bouncing on rougher terrain.  Note though, please drive responsibly on the course.

What e-bike related problems have you seen?

The only sporting clays e-bike related problem I have seen has been related to the kickstands and have had nothing to do with the scabbards.  It seems that when manufacturers started making e-bikes they didn’t quit get the kickstands strong enough and now there are reports of them breaking.  So definitely check the condition of your kickstand periodically.
